We all feel fear. It’s that little voice inside that whispers, “What if I fail?” or “What if they don’t like me?”
But what if I told you that fear can make those very things come true?
Yes, when we let fear take over, we act in ways that bring our worst worries to life.
WHAT: The Problem With Fear
Fear is more than just a feeling—it’s a powerful force that shapes how we act. When we believe something bad will happen, we unknowingly do things that make it more likely. This is called a self-fulfilling prophecy—when what we fear becomes real, not because it had to, but because we acted as if it would.
Example: You’re nervous about speaking up in a meeting because you think people won’t value your ideas. So, you stay quiet. Over time, people stop asking for your input. Now, your fear feels true—when in reality, your actions made it happen.
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.” — Henry Ford, Founder of Ford Motor Company
WHY: Why Fear Becomes Reality
- Your Body Reacts First When fear kicks in, your body tightens up. You might cross your arms, look away, or speak in a small voice. Others pick up on this and assume you’re unsure—even if you have great ideas!
- Your Actions Follow Your Fears If you believe you’ll fail, you might not try as hard or give up too soon. It’s not that you weren’t capable—you just didn’t give yourself a real chance.
- People Mirror Your Energy If you expect rejection, you might avoid eye contact, speak less, or seem closed off. Others sense this and respond in kind, making your fear feel real.
“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” — Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd U.S. President
HOW: Three Small Steps to Break the Cycle
- Notice Your Fear Patterns Pay attention to when you are reacting out of fear. Ask yourself: Is this fear talking, or is this reality? When you notice it, you can choose differently.
- Act As If the Opposite Were True Instead of assuming the worst, try acting as if things will go well. Speak up even when you feel nervous. Smile even if you’re unsure. Over time, your actions will shape a new reality.
- Change your inner script. Replace “I’ll fail” with “I’ll learn”. Swap “They won’t like me” with “I have something valuable to share”. Your brain believes what you tell it repeatedly.
